[edit] Premise
The Spectacular Spider-Man is the latest in the line of Spider-Man animated series, which include The Amazing Spider-Man (1967–1969), Spider-Man (1981-1982), Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981–1983), Spider-Man The Animated Series (1994–1998), Spider-Man Unlimited (1999) and Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2003). The series is based on the original Spider-Man comics created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko but references many other Spider-Man sources, such as the film trilogy and the "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics.[2] This series reflects on the Ultimate Spider-Man origin for Spider-Man, that Peter was bitten by a genetically altered spider, not a radioactive spider.
Peter Parker starts off as a high school teenager, with the new show having aspects of teenage angst in a modern world with modern social tools such as cell phones/text messaging along with pseudo-science to create the various super-villains. The program's tone is a combination of cartoon action, drama and comedy. In early episodes, Peter Parker begins rethinking his identity as Spider-Man and takes a dark tone at moments, but quickly switches back to light hearted high school comedy and awkward situations.
Each season of the series is set during a semester of Peter's high school year with Season One running from September to Thanksgiving and Season Two from December to March.[3]
Greg Weisman has stated the context of the series is a 1962 version of the Marvel Universe translated into today.[4] Consequently any possible cameos by other Marvel characters are limited to those that were around at that time e.g.
[edit] Plot
[edit] Season 1
The first season features Peter Parker as a high school junior having only in recent months acquired his powers and alias as Spider-Man. He's best friends with Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn and during the season he also gets his first job at the Daily Bugle run by J. Jonah Jameson and meets Mary Jane Watson. He faces revamped members of Spider-Man's rogues' gallery for the first time including Vulture, Hammerhead, Enforcers (consisting of Montana, Ox and Fancy Dan), Electro, Lizard, Sandman, Rhino, Doctor Octopus, Black Cat and Chameleon. Quentin Beck and Phineas Mason appear as Chameleon's associates.
A revamped Tombstone appears to serve as a villain of the series orchestrating crime in the New York City and the creation of some of the villains to distract Spider-Man from that crime with the help of Norman Osborn. Montana becomes this series version of Shocker while Harry Osborn becomes a red-herring version of Green Goblin upon drinking the Globulin Green formula. The Sinister Six is also born for the first time in episode 11 consisting of Vulture, Electro, Shocker, Sandman, Rhino, and Doctor Octopus. Spider-Man's symbiote black suit also makes an appearance; eventually leading to Eddie Brock's transformation into Venom.
[edit] Season 2
Following their confrontation in Season 1's finale, Peter starts the second season searching for Eddie Brock, but one of the main plot lines will be a gang war. [5]
New characters that are introduced in the second season include Master Planner,[6] Molten Man,[7] Roderick Kingsley,[8] Kraven the Hunter,[9] Calypso, Silver Sable,[10] Ricochet, Silvermane, Miles Warren,[11] Cletus Kasady, and Mysterioench]]. There will also be the return of first season characters including Green Goblin,[8] Doctor Octopus, Black Cat, Chameleon, Vulture, Sandman, Rhino, Electro, Venom, Tombstone and Hammerhead.[7] Chameleon's associates Quentin Beck and Phineas Mason will also return but in a different form, as Mysterio and the Terrible Tinkerer respectively.[3] Mysterio and Kraven replace Doctor Octopus and Shocker as members of the Sinister Six.
This season made its Canadian debut on Teletoon on January 11, 2009 at 10:30am EST/PST. Bulgarian network Nova TV airs two episodes a week and went ahead of the Canadian broadcast on January 25, 2009[12].
Marvel Animation Age has the exclusive episode descriptions for the second season[11] indicating that Shocker and Ox are returning from Season 1.
The Spectacular Spider-Man will air on Disney XD starting March 23 at 7:30 PM ET/PT.[13]
[edit] Season 3
According to Greg Weisman, Spider-Man villains Hobgoblin and Scorpion have been pencilled in for the yet to be commissioned third season.[14]
[edit] Characters
The timeline of the original Spider-Man story-arcs has been condensed and reconfigured in order to include classic and important characters who originally appeared much later. Characters such as Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, and Harry Osborn are depicted not as direct equivalents to their older counterparts from the comics, but rather as characters who evolve into their more established roles
[edit] Main Characters
[edit] Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Main article: Spider-Man
- Voice Actor: Josh Keaton
Bitten by a genetically altered spider while visiting Dr. Curt Connors' lab at Empire State University, Peter donned a spider themed costume to fight crime after allowing a burglar to escape, who later killed his Uncle Ben.
Peter was awarded an internship for Dr. Connors, a position which he held until being fired by Martha Connors for ditching the antidote plan to take pictures of the Lizard. However, his Lizard pictures caught the eye of J. Jonah Jameson who gave him a job as a Bugle freelancer to take more pictures of Spider-Man in action. He and Harry try out for the football team, but lets Harry join the football team. In the episode "Catalysts" he goes with Mary Jane to the Fall Formal. However, a few days later, Peter sees Mary Jane going out with Flash Thompson as she says they were just friends.
Following John Jameson's return from space, the alien symbiote was taken to Dr. Connors' lab for study. The symbiote then got loose during a fight between Spider-Man and Black Cat, leading to Spider-Man stepping on and bonding with the symbiote. It causes him to be more aggressive towards his enemies and others; it also gives him a strong desire to keep the symbiote, despite what it is doing to him. After a brief talk with Flash Thompson, Peter is able to think clearly once more and decides to get rid of the symbiote, only to find out it is trying everything it can to bond with him. With the spirit of Uncle Ben to guide him through, Peter was able to triumph over the suit and dispose of it. He later returns it Dr. Connors' lab and tries to destroy the suit forever by freezing it. Unfortunately, Eddie came in at the wrong time and misunderstood the situation, causing his hatred for both Peter and Spider-Man to rise up more than ever, giving the symbiote more than enough energy to break free of the ice and bond with him.
After returning to his normal suit, Peter meets a new villain, Venom. Realizing it is the symbiote and from its words, he realizes it is going after his loved ones. Upon hearing it call him "bro", he finds out that it is Eddie who has bonded with the symbiote. After it nearly attacked Aunt May it swore to get the "person he loved most" and kidnapped Gwen (though Peter assumed he was referring to Mary Jane). Peter decides enough is enough and fights Venom, only to realize he is no match for Venom, Peter tricked the symbiote off of Eddie by pretending to accept it back. Inside of his mind, the symbiote attempted to rejoin with him, only to be stopped by images of Peter's friends and family. Afterwards, Peter buries the symbiote in quick dry cement, deeply hoping never to see it again. Also, by the end of the first season, Peter fully and happily accepts his destiny as Spider-Man, and begins to realize his true feelings for Gwen after she kissed him.
In the second season, Peter realizes his feelings for Gwen and on several occasions tries to talk to her, but his duties as Spider-Man continue to interfere. On New Year's, Liz Allen kisses him revealing that she wants to be with him. The two became a couple later on.
In the episode "Final Curtain", Peter finally talked to Gwen and both confessed their feelings to each other, and agreed to end their respective relationships, which caused him to break up with Liz. Later he discovered the Green Goblin is revealed to be Norman Osborn, he took one of his pumpkin bombs and placed it in his glider, which caused it to explode and crashed with Norman in a water tank filled with pumpkin bombs. Feeling responsible for the death of Norman, Peter felt guilty and decided that he shouldn't be with Gwen and allowed her to stay with Harry.
[edit] Eddie Brock/Venom
Main article: Eddie Brock
- Voice Actor: Benjamin Diskin
Edward "Charles" Brock has had a life-long connection to Peter Parker, with both of their parents having died together in a plane crash. But while Peter had May and Ben Parker to act as his legal guardians, Eddie did not have anyone to take him in. Because of this he has always carried a envious subconscious hatred towards Peter for being able to live an easier life. However, he has repressed this attitude over the years by acting as a friend and mentor to Peter, often calling him "Bro". At Midtown High he was a quarterback for the football team, but defended Peter from harassment despite his inner resentment towards him. When the series begins, Eddie is a freshman at Empire State University, working as a lab assistant under Dr. Curt Connors. There he is joined by Peter and Gwen Stacy, who earn similar positions through their high school science class. As the series progresses, Eddie develops animosity towards Peter due to a series of misunderstandings, often involving photographs Peter had taken while secretly disguised as Spider-Man. This ultimately damages their friendship.
Soon after, Spider-Man merges with an alien symbiote brought to the Connors' lab which had been found attached to a space ship piloted by John Jameson. Eddie is subsequently fired from his job at Empire State University due to a lack of funding after the alien's disappearance. When Spider-Man manages to separate from the symbiote, he returns it to the ESU labs, raising Eddie's hopes of gaining his job back. However, his last hope is shattered when Spider-Man attempts to destroy it. The surviving alien, which feeds off of negative emotions, could sense Eddie's anger and deeply repressed hatred and pain. It subsequently bonded with him, revealing to him Spider-Man's identity as Peter Parker making him the first person in the series to figure out his secret identity. Together, they formed the creature known as "Venom", which refers to itself as "we".
After Venom attempts to stalk and threaten him out of irrational vengeance, Spider-Man tricks the symbiote into leaving Eddie by pretending he wanted to rejoin with it. After successfully deflecting the Symbiote's attempt to regain control, Spider-Man captures it and dumps it in wet cement at a local construction site.
Eddie returns in "First Steps", where he tricks Spider-Man into thinking he bonded with the symbiote again. This was, however, a trick which led to him finding the symbiote's location. In "Growing Pains", Venom unsuccessfully attempts to reveal Spider-Man's identity through the Daily Bugle. After attempting to unmask Spider-Man and sedate him with a gene cleanser, Spider-Man was ultimately able to feed him the cleanser, causing the symbiote to flee Eddie's body, escaping into the sewers. After lamenting that he cannot stop hating Peter since the symbiote"loves him for the hate", Eddie is taken to Ravencroft, presumably for psychiatric rehabilitation soon the he will bond to the symbiote once again to take revenge when his room mate becomes Carnage.
Here Eddie is based primarily on the version of the character appearing in Ultimate Spider-Man, retaining his childhood friendship with Peter and interest in science, while baring the mainstream version's more muscular build. Venom's black webbing resembles the version seen in Spider-Man 3, and also has the ability to grow a mouth on his lower stomach. When separated from the symbiote, Eddie apparently gained the knowledge to make a synthetic substance to imitate Peter's webbing. Venom, along with Tombstone, is one of the few villains who can physically defeat Spider-man.
[edit] Liz Allan
- Voice Actor: Alanna Ubach
Liz was Flash Thompson's high-class cheerleader girlfriend. She is Hispanic (Puerto Rican) in this version.
Originally viewing Peter as a nerd and would call him "Petey", she was forced by their science teacher, Mr. Warren, into being tutored by Peter. She showed no interest at first and would rather fail until Peter bailed to chase down Electro. Liz had a change of heart and agreed to more tutoring as Dr. Connor's lab where Electro attacked. The following day at school, Liz brushed Peter off as usual, but only after Flash catches her talking to him. She showed slight regret after brushing him off and later wished him luck at football tryouts. In the episode "Catalysts", she was shocked when she saw Peter with Mary Jane and smiles (perhaps happy for Peter). However, she was shown mad when Mary Jane won as prom queen. Eventually, after Flash takes Mary Jane to a carnival at Coney Island, she decides to take Peter as a date. Despite her reputation potentially being in danger, we see another side to Liz's personality, as she seemed to harbor romantic feelings towards Peter. Later that night, for an unknown reason, and in tears, she had broken up with Flash. This might have either been because he took Mary Jane to the carnival or her feelings for Peter. This has yet to be revealed. She was concerned about Peter when his Aunt May had a heart attack. She currently seems to have a crush on him as shown in "Nature vs. Nurture".
In the second season, Liz is shown to develop a hinted of jealously when she sees Gwen staring at Peter. Liz is also shown a sign of concern for Flash after the incident in a Football match, hinting that she might still have feelings for him. On New Year's, she reveals to Peter while she cares for Flash, she wants to be with him. She then kisses him. The two are a couple by the next episode, but their relationship is rocky at best. For one, Peter is always busy as Spider-Man. And for another, his interest is more in Gwen than Liz, despite his efforts to be a good boyfriend for the latter. Eventually, the two break it up, though Liz is heartbroken over it.
[edit] Gwen Stacy
Main article: Gwen Stacy Voice Actor: Lacey Chabert (Season 1 and 2) and Lisa Ortiz(Season 3 and onward)
Gwen is one of Peter Parker's best friends and an intellectual equal, not to mention harboring a crush on him. Her appearance and personality here is very different than past incarnations and appears to be partially influenced by Debra Whitman's character.
She is the daughter of Police Captain George Stacy and also gained an internship with Dr. Connors at Empire State. She was disappointed in Peter for ditching the cure effort for when Dr. Connors turned into the Lizard, but soon forgave him. In the episode "The Invisible Hand" Peter unintentionally lies to Gwen saying he is not going to the Fall Formal (school dance), but later finds himself courted by Mary Jane. At the formal, Gwen is silently hurt when seeing Peter and Mary Jane together, believing that he lied to her. She later becomes concerned for Harry's health when he starts abusing the performance enhancing formula Globulin Green. She admits her feelings for Peter to Mary Jane in "Intervention". In the following episode, "Nature vs. Nurture", Gwen follows Mary Jane's advice and begins showing a more active interest in him. During the Thanksgiving parade, she is kidnapped by Venom, on the basis that he is going to harm the person Peter loves the most. This, coupled with Gwen later kissing Peter after their Thanksgiving dinner, causes Peter to realize her feelings for him and his possible subsequent feelings for her.
However, Liz Allen's own growing affections for Peter leads him to start going out with her instead, much to Gwen's dismay. Gwen is later kidnapped by Electro and used as a hostage by the Master Planner, who forces her father to do as he says. Gwen is saved by Spider-Man however. She soon finds herself the center of the returned Harry Osborn's attention, and winds up his girl, despite her interest in Peter.
Later in "Gangland" she got a facial makeover with Mary Jane's help and has stopped wearing her glasses since.
When the Goblin took control of New York, Peter and Gwen finally talked, and agreed to end their respective relationships so they could be together. However, when Harry lost his father, Gwen stayed with him out of guilt.
[edit] Harry Osborn
Main article: Harry Osborn Voice Actor: James Arnold Taylor Harry is Peter's other best friend and son of ruthless industrialist Norman Osborn.
He constantly lives in his father's shadow and considers Peter a good friend despite being much richer than him. Harry drops Peter as a friend after failing to tutor him twice, leading to his failure on the calculus test. However, when Norman gives Harry a lecture on self-responsibility, Harry reconsiders his decision. He apologizes and forgives Peter, and together, they try out for the football team to teach Flash a lesson. Harry then becomes a member of the football team. As a result of this, he has become significantly more popular, even going to the fall formal with Kenny Kong's ex-girlfriend, Glory Grant.
In the episode "Catalysts", it's shown that he has developed a hidden jealousy towards Peter, seen where Pete is showing off his date, Mary Jane to the popular clique. In this episode, he's also dumped by Glory at the dance who reunited with Kenny "King" Kong again. Curiously, this provokes him to take one of Oscorp's drugs from his locker, named "Globulin Green", out of anxiety in order to enhanced his natural abilities in football. However, it affected Harry's mind, causing a number of black outs in which he could not account for his actions.
It was believed Harry was the Green Goblin, due to his being discovered by Spider-Man in the costume during one of his blackouts, complete with broken leg from one of their earlier battles. However, this was later learned to be a ruse by the true goblin. Norman pleaded on his behalf, and Spider-Man allowed Harry to go free on the condition he never again took the globulin green and became the Goblin. Gwen told Peter at school the next day that Harry was taking a leave of absence to get the help he needs.
Harry returned mid-second season, where he is shown to be developing a crush on Gwen, since he asks her to Flash's party "as friends", but is shown to look otherwise. This was proven in the next episode when they become a couple.
During a confrontation with Flash, whom was angered by Harry's leaving mid-season (and thus, indirectly, leading to his injury) found out Harry had been using performance enhancers to make it for the football team, and subsequently help them win their games. Flash turned him in to the principal, and Harry quickly found himself outcast by the in-crowd again... and with the pain of rejection and disappointment growing, the temptation to return to the globulin green was getting stronger. However, Harry smashed his hidden supply to prevent himself from giving in to temptation.
It was later learned Harry had never been the Green Goblin, but had been set up to take the fall for him. His father, Norman, was soon revealed to be the real Goblin, and subsequently apparently killed by his own pumpkin-bombs during a climatic confrontation with Spider-Man. Harry, beside himself with loss, consoled himself that at least he still had Gwen and Peter at his side, and has Gwen as a girlfriend. However, earlier, Harry had overheard a private conversation between Gwen and Peter where the two of them admitted their mutual attraction and their subsequent resolution to end their current relationships so they could be together. This makes the statement Harry makes--that if he didn't have Gwen, he'd probably backslide on his Gobulin Green addiction--appear to be highly calculated from the character's perspective, and bodes poorly for his future relationship with Peter.
[edit] Lonnie Thompson Lincoln/Tombstone/Big Man
Main article: Tombstone (comics)
- Voice Actor: Keith David (Survival of the Fittest), Kevin Michael Richardson (All other episodes)
As the main villain of the series, L. Thompson Lincoln is believed by Spider-Man to be the true identity of the "Big Man," though he says he's gone by many names, his favorite being Tombstone. Tombstone is one of the few villains to best Spider-Man in a fight, though it was largely because he caught Spider-Man off-guard and did not press the issue once he'd proven himself as anything but a pushover.
When rumors of the Spider-Man began circulating New York, the Big Man had Hammerhead investigate the matter proper to make certain his criminal associates were sincere. When they had confirmation, he ordered the Enforcers to squash Spider-Man, but they subsequently failed. However, the attacks of newly emerging supervillains such as the Vulture, Electro, and even the Big Man's Shocker inspired him with a new idea. Creating supervillains whom would keep Spider-Man busy (if not outright eliminate him) and protect his criminal interests.
When Spider-Man discovered his secret criminal identity, Thompson offered him money to look the other way in the future, but Spider-Man refused. In return, Lincoln called the police in to make Spider-Man look like the villain.
Later Spider-Man ended up saving him from an attack by the Green Goblin at a banquet he attended (they take the fight outside and Spidey hits the Goblin, saying "And THAT'S for making me protect Tombstone!"). When they got rid of the time-bomb the Green Goblin had planted, the crime boss commented to the Web-Slinger that he offered money for what Spider-Man just did for free. The Green Goblin later kidnaps Hammerhead in another attempt to kill Tombstone, which fails thanks to Spider-Man and Tombstone's intervention.
Some time later, the symbiote took temporary control and returned to Tombstone to accept his job offer. When released from the symbiote's control, Spider-Man broke the deal. Tombstone begrudgingly accepted Eddie Brock/Venom's job offer a moment later.
With Silvermane due to return to New York and the rising troubles from Dr. Octopus organized supervillains, Tombstone began to fear a gang war would soon erupt that would threaten the Big Man's Empire. To this end, he met with his Enforcers and had them upgraded by Tinkerer. This action, however, coupled with his growing friction with his subordinate Hammerhead, led the latter to begin to strike out on his own.
Later at the Valentine's Day summit, Hammerhead (through an unknown benefactor) sets him, Silvermane, and Doctor Octopus up in a three-way brawl for control of the New York underworld. After Sivermane and Ock were subdued, Spiderman and Tombstone finish the fight in a tunnel full of pipes. Spiderman defeats the Big Man by hurling an iron pump into his face knocking him out unconscious and finally turns him over to the police, with testimony from Foswell that confirmed he was the Big Man. He later made bail, but was to be kept under survallience, preventing a return to his criminal activities. As he returned to his office, he saw the Green Goblin sitting in his chair declaring himself the new Big Man.
[edit] Mary Jane Watson
Main article: Mary Jane Watson Voice Actor: Vanessa Marshall
Mary Jane was first mentioned early on in the series by an enthusiastic Aunt May. However, as Aunt May believed her to have a "wonderful personality", Peter was naturally off-put. A running gag that had occurred had Peter (and one time Harry) shuddering every time he heard Mary Jane's name, because she was described as having a "wonderful personality."
Eventually, on the night of the Midtown fall formal, Peter (who had just been rejected by Betty), prepares himself for the utter worst. To his main surprise, he is stunned to find that Mary Jane is in fact, gorgeous. Peter, stricken with no words, and a dazed grin; Mary Jane pulls a sly smile and states the famous line: "Face, it Tiger, you just hit the jackpot!" At the formal, Mary Jane manages to both surprise and impress the popular clique (Flash in particular). Her flirty behavior is also emphasized when dancing with a visibly interested Randy Robertson and Hobie Brown. She even wins prom queen, even though no one knows her name yet being called "That red headed girl that came with Peter Parker". Despite Peter having to leave for The Bugle (while in reality, Spider-Man), Mary Jane graciously offers him a last dance as the formal closes.
In the episode "Reaction", she goes to the carnival with Flash Thompson, but it's later shown that she never considered being in a true relationship with anybody. She later hooks up with Eddie Brock after attending a fundraiser together. After his reckless motorcycle driving and hearing his and Peter's history, she tells him to stop so she can get off. Before leaving, she tells Eddie that despite his many flaws, Peter was twice the man he'd ever be. She later revealed this to Peter, telling him he only asked her out to break the two of them up, as he was under the assumption they were dating. This information prompts Peter to believe Venom/Eddie is going after her when he remarks he would "harm the one he loves most". However, Venom ended up going after Gwen which causes the series to have a twist.
She transfers to Midtown High School after being accepted into the theater magnet. She later has a talk with Gwen concerning her feelings for Peter. Though Gwen initially denies having any romantic interest toward him, Mary Jane coaxes Gwen to admit her feelings toward him and warns her to let him know to avoid future regret.
In the second season, Mary Jane still talks about Gwen's current relationship with Peter and is surprised to hear that she kissed him and was pleased on how their relationship are progressing. Mary Jane has caught the attention of Liz Allan's older brother, Mark, and later developed an attraction to him. She was devasted when Mark was turned into Molten Man by the evil Miles Warren.

The series is developed for television by supervising producers Victor Cook and Greg Weisman; Victor Cook is the series supervising director and Greg Weisman is the series story editor. The lead character designer for the series is Sean Galloway.
The art style of the series is more simplified than in previous incarnations, although the characters do maintain their iconic elements, this was done to ensure the Spider-Man would move as he should and replicate the fluidity from Sam Raimi's movie incarnation.[15]
According to writer Greg Weisman the timeline of the original Spider-Man story-arcs, which the series is based on, was condensed in order to move the series forward and include such classic and important characters such as Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, and Harry Osborn.
The series is structured into multiple small loose "arcs" for DVD releases; the first season consists of four such arcs, beginning with a three-episode arc that introduces Dr. Connors and his experimentations with Lizard DNA and Peter's time with Empire State University before he joins the Daily Bugle, the second three-episode story centred on Norman Osborn's experiments and the villains they create for the Big Man, the third three-episode arc follows the mysterious Green Goblin and Harry Osborn's use of "Globulin Green" formula and a final four-part adventure featuring Spider-Man's symbiote costume. The second season includes the four-episode Master Planner arc, three-episode Venom arc, three-episode Gang War arc, and another three-episode Green Goblin arc.
The show's creators are striving to reach 65 episodes.[16]
The main theme song is performed by The Tender Box.[17] The series main title sequence directed by Victor Cook
Hasbro released a toy line of action figures in March 2008.[18]
Happy Meal will have it's 30th Anniversiary with The Spectacular Spider-Man Toys at McDonalds. Coming in March, Because Disney XD Will begin airing The Spectacular Spider-Man starting March 23 at 7:30 PM ET/PT.
