Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a video game featuring Spider-Man and other characters in the Marvel Comics universe, including Mary Jane Watson, Venom, and Black Cat. The game was released on October 21, 2008 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, and Wii.

Plot[]

The game opens with Spider-Man on a perquisition for Mary Jane Watson. At the same time, the city of New York is beset with symbiotes. After finding Mary Jane with Luke Cage, Spider-Man is attacked by a mysterious figure. He retells his account of how his fight with Venom ended with a piece of the symbiote fastening to himself during a flashback to four days earlier. After the encounter with Venom, an injured Mary Jane is sent to the hospital where she meets Luke Cage in the middle of a gang war. Spider-Man and Luke Cage hunt down the gang leaders of the city, the Rolling Sevens and Park Avenue gangs. He manages to get them to accede to a meeting in a Harlem park.

Outside the place of the meeting, Spider-Man discovers high-tech assassins on top of buildings after defeating them and leaving Cage to take care of the gangs. He traces the assassins to Kingpin. He ends up confronting the Black Cat, who seems to be working with Kingpin. After a brief battle, Black Cat reveals she is working for Kingpin. The duo joins forces with Moon Knight in order to stop Kingpin's illicit activities. After a fight with Vulture, Spider-Man runs into many of Kingpin's henchman on top of the Daily Bugle. They are attacked by civilians infected by symbiotes. A news helicopter spots Spider-Man throwing one of the civilians off the building, their affliction unknown to the police.

The police now believe that Spider-Man is a murderer. Wolverine, believing Spider-Man is infected by the symbiote himself, accosts him in Hell's Kitchen. After a battle the two eventually settle their differences and begin hunting down infected civilians together. Spider-Man discovers Venom throwing people into symbiote pods, transforming them into monsters. After a city-wide battle, Venom escapes, but many of the pods are destroyed. A S.H.I.E.L.D. team, led by Black Widow, arrives and quarantines the city of New York, setting up camps for the symbiote-controlled citizens. Electro attacks one of the camps searching for his sister, Spiderman defeats him, but he is then shot by Black Widow while spiderman reprimands Black Widow for her actions Electro sister gives her symbiote to him to heal him infecting him in the process.

Spider-Man devises a plan to break Tinkerer out of Ryker's Island to use his scientific genius to find a countermeasure to the symbiotes. After doing a number of support efforts by Black Widow, Moon Knight, King Pin, and defeating symbiote controlled Electro, Spiderman then helps Wolverine clear a church of civilians out of the area and Wolverine himself is affected. Spider-Man is able to free him of it. Spider-Man goes looking for Mary Jane. After finding her, he helps her, and Luke Cage clear out Harlem. He visits a building where he finds a symbiote-controlled Black Cat, apparently the leader of the hive. He defeats her, and the Tinkerer completes his device.

Spider-Man now has a choice. He can activate the device, killing off all of the symbiotes, or become governed by the Black Suit. He then responds to an attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, with Venom as the perpetrator.

(Depending on your actions) Spider-Man enlists either Moon Knight or Vulture to carry him to the Helicarrier. He sets a bomb to destroy the ship, but is confronted by Venom in the form of a five headed monster. Spider-Man destroys four of the heads, and then either gets Eddie Brock to help him defeat the symbiotes, or kills Eddie.

During the "good" ending, Eddie Brock realizes the destruction of his alter ego, and sacrifices himself. During the "bad" ending, Spider-Man gets possessed by the Black Suit and murders Eddie, and destroys the symbiote.

Red/Hero ending - The following week, Spider-Man swings away with Mary Jane after describing his heroic actions.

Anti-hero ending - The following week, Spider-Man leaves an apology for his bad decisions on Mary Jane's voicemail.

Anti-villain ending - Spider-Man controls the city with the power provided by his Black Suit.

Black/Villain ending - Spider-Man controls the city with the power provided by his Black Suit, with the help of a symbiote-controlled Black Cat. It is revealed that Kingpin, Tinkerer, and Black Widow have joined forces to stop them by unleashing a symbiote-controlled Wolverine.
