Morris Bench (of Earth-616), also known as Hydro-Man, is a Marvel Comics character and an adversary of Spider-Man.

He first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #212, in May of 1981.

History[]

Early life[]

Morris born in the Bronx, New York, made a living as a crewman on the cargo ship known as the U.S.S. Bulldog.

Becoming Hydro-Man[]

He was on duty one day, working on a nuclear sub, when Spider-Man battle with Sub-Mariner caused it to explode. This triggered a mutation in Bench, fusing his molecules with those of the ocean water. After tracking down Spider-Man through various sewer lines, shower drains, and water valves, the two finally met and Hydro-Man instigated a battle, only to be scattered in his water form over the rooftops of New York, he evaporated under the heat of the sun.

Soon, his body began recondensing itself, however, and after the process was complete he embarked on a life of crime.

Life as Hydro-Man[]

Soon after, Hydro-Man met his rival, Sandman, in a bar. The two fought over the attention of barfly Sadie Frickett, a fight which soon became physical, with Hydro-Man using his water abilities against the Sandman's own powers. As a result, the two were accidentally merged to form a giant mud-like monster. The police were forced to dehydrate the monster into rubble, and the two remained that way for several months, until their respective molecules began drawing themselves back to each other, reconstituting themselves back into their separate forms. Hydro-Man then began working with groups such as the Frightful Four and the Sinister Six.

For a brief period of time, Hydro-Man was also under the employment of Hammerhead. However, after Hammerhead's apparent death and the arrest of Wilson Fisk, he returned to a solo career. Hydro-Man then teamed up with Shocker to look for enough money to retire on, but Hydro-Man still sought revenge against Spider-Man, which ultimately led to their failure in that aspect. He then returned to the Frightful Four for a brief time, followed by a stay as a member of the Sinister Twelve, having been invited by Norman Osborn.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Transformation: Hydro-Man possesses the ability to bodily transform himself, in whole or in part, into a watery liquid substance of unknown composition. While in this state, his consciousness can control every droplet that comprises his body. Like Sandman, he is also one of the extremely few individuals who has complete control over every molecule in his body. Thus he can will himself to turn liquid whenever struck. (Presumably if he were to will just his torso liquid, his still solid head and arms would fall to the ground. It is not known if this would cause injury to his solid parts or not). The Hydro-Man can also propel the liquid particles of his body at great pressure in the same style as water shooting through a fire hose. It is not known how he generates the pressure to create this effect. Also he can harden his fist as if it were ice hard.
  • Form Change: Apparently Hydro-Man's liquid particles each possess some form of attraction for one another so that his disintegrated consciousness can draw all of the particles back into cohesion after total dispersal. It is not known if there is a limit to the particles' ability to attract one another. Nor is it known if there is a limit to how long Hydro-Man can remain in a completely aqueous state. Although he can merge with ordinary water, or use if to increase his mass, he does not gain mental control over this liquid as he does his own. Apparently, he has no difficulty reforming his solid physical state, even while fully immersed in water.
  • Super Strength: His superhuman strength is extremely minimal compared to most metahumans as he can only lift 550 pounds (about 1 quarter of a ton).
