Marvel's Spider-Man is a video game developed by Insomniac Games based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The game was released on September 7th, 2018, originally as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

A PlayStation 5 remaster was released on November 12th/19th, 2020 with the Ultimate Edition of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but a standalone release was released on May 4th, 2023.[1] The remaster was released on PC from Steam and the Epic Games Store on August 12th, 2022.

It was unveiled during Sony's press conference at E3 2016 and a look at the gameplay was revealed the following year.

Plot[]

The game starts with Peter Parker hearing a police transmission on his phone regarding Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin. Desperate to put him behind bars for good, Peter suits up as Spider-Man and rushes to Fisk tower (ignoring his past due rent), and after a hard fight, he finally gets Fisk arrested, but ruins his costume in the process.

Cast[]

Gameplay[]

Spider-Man will be able to freely roam around solely Manhattan, New York City, similar to Spider-Man 3. Unlike Spider-Man 3, the player is able to interact with citizens.

It has some gameplay mechanics that were once appeared in all mostly previous Activision’s 3D Spider-Man games. However, some side events or missions, such as rescuing a balloon or assisting with a pizza delivery from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 game have been omitted. The web swing button function is once again to have only 1 button much like all previous Spider-Man third-version action games, excluding The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game which had 2 buttons of web swing input. As web zip can only be done with jump button while airborne, sprint and web swing mechanics shares a same button in different ways, whereas sprint can only be used on the ground and wall, while web swinging can only be used while airborne. Stealth system is also improved, such as now being able web strike during stealth mission. However, some stealth takedowns (such as ceiling and wall) are still missing and being included in the next games.

Players will also play as Peter during parts of the game. Additionally, Mary Jane and Miles Morales (pre-Ending) will also be playable in stealth sections. They will not just be a bystander, players will even play as MJ and Miles for key moments.[2] Aside from featuring Spider-Man’s rogues gallery like the Sinister Six (Dr. Octopus), Shocker, Rhino, Electro, Scorpion, Vulture), Silver Sable, Mister Negative, Tombstone, Norman Osborn and Venom (Harry Osborn incarnation), including Kingpin and Taskmaster, it also features many cameos and mentions from other Marvel Universe, such as Daredevil, Doctor Strange, The Avengers and Jessica Jones.

There are many collectibles in this game including many tokens such as Base Tokens (awarded for completing Fisk Construction sites, Demon Warehouses, Sable Outposts, Hammerhead Fronts and Hammerhead's Project Olympus Hideouts; Challenge Tokens (awarded for completing Taskmaster Challenges and Screwball Challenges); Research Tokens (awarded for completing Research Stations and gathering pigeons for Howard) and Crime Tokens (awarded for completing semi-spontaneous crimes which appear around the districts.

Features[]

  • Blockbuster Action in an Open World – Swing freely through Marvel’s New York City as Spider-Man through blockbuster action set-pieces filled with a rich narrative and relatable characters. Aside from Peter Parker, it is was confirmed in a San Diego Comic-Con 2018 interview that there was a possibility to have different playable Spider-Men at launch.[3]
  • New Game+: Allows the player to restart from the beginning of the game, while keeping their suits, powers, and upgrades or create their own save game, including on restart fighting the previous bosses the player has fought in their first full gameplay.

Remaster[]

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered was released on November 12th and 19th, 2020, available only through Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales's Ultimate Edition. A standalone release will be released in May 2023. A PC port was released on August 12th, 2022. The game includes features from Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales that the PlayStation 4 version did not have.

  • Improved Graphics
    • The game features improved graphics, including ray-tracing, ambient shadows and improved models.
  • Peter Parker re-cast
    • In the PlayStation 4 version of Marvel's Spider-Man, Peter Parker's face model was based on John Bubniak. For the remaster and Miles Morales, Insomniac Games recast Bubniak with Ben Jordan, claiming that Jordan better matches Yuri Lowenthal's facial capture.
  • Multiple Performance Modes
    • The game features three different graphics modes: Fidelity, Performance RT and Performance.
      • Fidelity: Fidelity has the best graphics quality out of the three modes, but the framerate is the worst, running at 30 frames per second.
      • Performance RT: Performance RT runs at 60 frames per second, but includes ray-tracing.
      • Performance: Performance has the worst graphics quality out of the three modes, but does so to get the best performance out of the three modes.
  • New Photo Mode Features
    • You can now place lights while in Photo Mode, and can switch suits in the Photo Mode menu.
  • Exclusive Suits
    • The game includes two exclusive suits, the Hybrid Suit (a.k.a the Integrated Suit) and the Black & Gold Suit from Spider-Man: No Way Home. Insomniac explained the reason of the suits being exclusive to the remaster as: "Since it’s 2018 release, we’ve updated Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4) 19 times, adding more suits and features than originally planned. Each patch has been more technically complex, especially with maintaining PS4 HDD streaming performance. To ensure fans continue enjoying Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4) at its optimal performance, we’ve made the difficult decision to release these new suits for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered where our PS5 engine allows us to update the game without jeopardizing player experience."

PS4 Pro Bundle[]

PS4 Pro Bundle - Marvel's Spider-Man

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, players can opt to buy the Limited Edition PS4 Pro Bundle of the game for $399.99. This edition includes the base game, The City That Never Sleeps DLC, plus a Spider-Man themed PS4 Pro and controller.

Trivia[]

  • The side mission Spider-Man P.I. sees Spider-Man following the husband of a woman named Carmen, as she suspects him to be involved with organized crime. One part of the mission, Carmen's husband enters a building with two people, Niko and Dashawn. Niko begins to explain the plan to Carmen's husband and Dashawn, during which Niko mentions their getaway driver, his brother Roman. This is a reference to the main characters of the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV: Niko and Roman Bellic.
