ā€” Madame Web

Julia Carpenter (of Earth-616) was the second person to assume the identity of Spider-Woman, but now she assists other superheroes as the new Madame Web.

History[]

Origin[]

Julia Carpenter was a struggling single mother trying to make ends meet when she was approached by her college friend Valerie Cooper. Valerie offered her a chance to earn some extra money by participating in some government sponsored exercise studies. What Julia didn't realize was that Valerie was part of a secret program to create superhuman soldiers. While working with Valerie, Julia was injected with a mixture of spider-venoms and plant toxins while being told she was taking a "vitamin injection". The venoms mutated Julia, giving her spidery-psionic powers. Valerie convinced Julia to become a goverment agent, the new Spider-Woman.

The Adventures of Spider-Woman[]

Spider-Woman II Earth-616

Spider-Woman was barely trained to be a superhero before she was pulled into the Secret Wars, and teamed up with Spider-Man and the Avengers. Spider-Woman died in battle but Doom (with the power of the Beyonder) resurrected her.

After she returned to Earth, Julia was drafted into the Freedom Force (The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants forced to become a government superhro team ). In an early mission with Freedom Force was sent to capture the X-Men, and Julia encountered Jessica Drew (the now powerless original Spider-Woman). Julia began to question working with known criminals. When Freedom Force was sent to arrest the Avengers and Julia actually help to defeated the them and the West Coast team. Spider-Woman realized her mistakes and freed the Avengers from jail. As a known fugitive, she teamed up with Spider-Man.

After her name was cleared, Julia joined the West Coast Avengers. When they were disbanded, Julia joined Iron Man's new super-team, Force Works.

Julia had her powers stolen by Charlotte Witter, and she retired to become a better mother to her daughter Rachel.

Julia underwent special treatments to regain her powers, and rejoined the Avengers under the new identity of Arachne. Julia and her new boyfriend, the Shroud, were secretly working to protect other heroes from the new Superhuman Registration Act. When her betrayal was uncovered, Julia fought against Ms. Marvel and was arrested trying to get back to her daughter.

Omega Flight[]

After being offered a chance to have her charges dropped, Arachne became a member of Canada's newest super team Omega Flight.

The Gauntlet/Grim Hunt[]

Arachne became caught in a war between various Spider-heroes and the Kraven family. She helped Spider-Man escape from Ana and Aloysha Kravinoff, they are confronted by the Chameleon (in the form of Ezekiel), who told them of the war of the Spider and Hunter tribes. Arachne is captured by the the Kravinoffs, along with AraƱa and Madame Web. When Madame Web is mortally wounded, she passes her psychic powers to Julia and she became the new Madame Web. As Madame Web, Julia stopped Spider-Man from killing Kraven, explaining to him that his act of violence would turn him into a murderer.

Julia becomes Madame Web

Spider-Island[]

Madame Web helped to guide Spider-Man when every person in Manhattan gained spider-powers. She helps them create a cure for the virus and offers the cure to Spider-Man himself, but he declines. She apologizes for "the suffering that is to come" before she leaves.

No Turning Back[]

Madame Web gets a vision telling her that the Great Web is being destroyed. She is falls into a coma. After she awakens Julia finds herself stripped of all her powers yet again. Despite being powerless, Julia proved more than capable of still being a hero when she fought the Shroud and aided The Prowler.

Order of the Web[]

Julia regained her powers through unknown means and resumed her role as Madame Web. Powerful precognitive visions compelled her to form a team of spider-powered heroes to stop Spider-Man from saving the the life of Norman Osborn

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

Main article: Spider Powers
  • Spider Physiology
  • Superhuman Strength: Julia possesses superhuman strength enabling her to lift at least 10 tons.
  • Superhuman Speed: Julia is capable of running and moving at speeds considerably greater than the finest human athlete.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Julia's musculature produces less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human. She can physically exert herself at peak capacity for several hours before fatigue begins to impair her.
  • Superhuman Agility: Julia's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Julia's natural reaction time is enhanced to a level that is beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete.
  • Superhuman Durability: The tissues of her body are somewhat harder and more resistant to injury than those of an ordinary human. While far from invulnerable, Julia is able to withstand impact forces that would severely injure or kill an ordinary human with only mild to moderate discomfort.
  • Accelerated Healing Factor: If injured, Julia is able to recover from mild to moderate injuries somewhat faster and more efficiently than an ordinary human. She is capable of fully healing on her own in a matter of days that would require an ordinary human to undergo surgery. Julia is also physically immune to all known types of poisons.
  • Superhuman Sense of Touch: Julia's sense of touch is developed to the point that she can sense vibration like a spider on its webs. Her senses are so sharp, that she can detect a hollow area under a solid steel floor by walking over it.
  • Psionic Powers: Some of Julia's spider-like abilities are the results of latent psionic capabilities rather than her physical attributes.
    • Wall Crawling: She can stick to walls in a manner similar to Spider-Man, however, her ability is psionically based.
Psychic-Webs MW

Julia using her psi-webs

    • Psychokinetic Webbing: the ability to utilize psionic-based webbing (psi-webs), although it requires a lot of concentration to manifest (at least it did at first, as she seems to have no such problems with this power now). By using psychokinetic energy, she can bind ambient free-floating molecules into strands of solid force. Her psi-webs can be used to wrap enemies, or focused into narrow web-lines that she can swing from. Due to its psychic nature, her psi-webs can be used in ways Spider-Man's webbing never could, such as causing webs to form from a distance, or controlling the movement of her webbing mentally. She can even use her psi-webs to scan for psychic vibrations and track her enemies within a finite area.
    • Prescience: ability to perceive aspects of the future
    • Clairvoyance: sensitivity to psychic energies in her environment allows her to see her immediate area and events taking place far away.
    • Telepathy: ability to read minds and project thoughts.
    • Astral Projection: ability to project her consciousness outside her body and travel along the astral plain.

Abilities[]

Julia is a good hand-to-hand combatant.

Notes[]

  • The appearance of Spider-Man's black costume and Venom is based on Julia's costume.
  • Julia was last known to be romantically involved with Shroud, it is unknown if this relationship still exists. She recently stated that Spider-Man's personality is the only thing that stopped her from dating him.
  • Not only is Julia the second Spider-Woman, she is also the second Arachne and second Madame Web.

Trivia[]

  • Julia is a fan of Dazzler's music.
