— Human Torch

Jonathan Lowell Spencer Storm (of Earth-616), usually called Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, is a fictional character, a superhero who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics and a member of the Fantastic Four. He is a longtime ally and best friend of Spider-Man

History[]

Fantastic Four[]

Johnny and his older sister Susan Storm were born to surgeon Franklin Storm. However, after a incident involving involuntary manslaughter, Franklin was sent to jail, and asked Sue not to visit him, even asking her to tell Johnny he was dead.

In 1985, following Sue, Johnny joined Reed Richards and pilot Ben Grimm on an unauthorized space flight. After their ship was bombarded by a field of cosmic radiation, which affected the group. Upon a crash landing back to Earth, they found out they had been granted superpowers by the energy. Johnny in particular was able to set himself on fire, fly and and project fiery projectiles. After they decided to become the superhero team the Fantastic Four, Johnny became their wild card the Human Torch.

Meeting Spider-Man[]

Sometime later, Johnny met another teen superhero, Spider-Man. Despite their early misunderstandings, the Human Torch and Spider-Man eventually became great friends and friendly competitors, with Spider-Man revealing to Storm his secret identity as Peter Parker.

Civil War[]

The superhuman Civil War split the team in a big way. Johnny was beat into brief coma during a visit in a nightclub, over the Stanford disaster. When he awoke he had nobody to greet him. Johnny joined Captain America's faction along with Sue.

At the end of the Civil War, Johnny and Sue returned to the Fantastic Four. As he continued to serve on the team along side with The Thing. T'Challa AKA Black Panther and Storm (a mutant from the X-Men) fills into the team while Reed and Sue reconcile.

Secret Invasion[]

A Skrull invaded the Baxter Building, poses as Sue and sent the team to the Negative Zone. Johnny confronted the Skrull, and revealed herself as Lyja (his old flame), when the team was ready to leave, Lyja refuse to leave because she wanted to find out who she was.

Death and Return[]

Johnny's last stand in Fantastic Four #587

In the conclusion of the 2011 Three storyline, in Fantastic Four #587, the Human Torch dies fighting a horde of aliens from the Negative Zone. In FF, following this devastating loss, Spider-Man joined the team, per the requests of Johnny's last will.

It is later revealed that Johnny was revived by a species of insect-like creatures that were implanted in his body by Annihilus in an attempt to force Storm to help open the Negative Zone portal. However, Johnny managed to overthrow Annihilus and gained control of the Cosmic Rod, and thus the forces of the Negative Zone, including the Annihilation Wave.

Fall of the Fantastic Four[]

When monsters invaded New York, Johnny Storm sacrificed his powers to stop them. He managed to cope with the loss of his powers. During his second invasion, Johnny was helping some of his allies of the Fantastic Four, the portals from the Counter-Earth were closed by Mr. Fantastic. The radiation resulted to Johnny having his powers back.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Pyrokinesis: The Human Torch possesses the mental ability to control ambient heat and the physical ability to transform his entire body or portions of his body into a fiery, plasma state at will.
  • Plasma Form: The Human Torch can envelop his entire body or portions of his body with fiery plasma state without harming himself (plasma is a super-heated stated of matter such as exists in the atmosphere of stars). When aflame, the Human Torch is enveloped by a low intensity flame of low level plasma (which looks like reddish ambient energy) at approximately 780 Fahrenheit.
  • Fire Manipulation: The Human Torch can generate shapes that are composed of fire from any point on his body. He usually employs his hands to "sculpt" flames, occasionally as a lasso to ensnare enemies. He can form fire into long streams, spheres, or even more shapes like writing letters in the sky.
  • Nova Flame: The Human Torch refers to his highest, most hottest levels of plasma that he can create called "nova flame." The exact temperatures that his "nova flame" can attain are not known. At an average rate of expenditure of energy, the Human Torch can stay aflame for about 16.8 hours. In his younger days, he could only maintain his flame for much briefer periods and sometimes get exhausted while in combat. He cannot maintain his "nova flame" for as long a time as he can maintain his ordinary flame. The Human Torch can release all of his body's stored energy in one intense "nova-burst," which can reach about 1,000,000 F, which is similar to the heat-pulse of a nuclear detonation
  • Flight: The Human Torch's plasma has a high hydrogen content and is surrounded by an exuded cloud of mono-atmoic hydrogen atoms. The hot cloud provides sufficient positive buoyancy for him to float. Using mental stimulation of his flame, he can provide enough lift to carry around 180 pounds. By forming a jet from his feet, (which can also be directed behind him) he can achieve a normal flight speed of 140 miles per hour and accelerate up to supersonic speeds.
  • Thermokinesis: The Human Torch has the ability to mentally control the ambient heat within his environment, even when he himself is not aflame. He can reduce objects' temperatures (if they are in a normal range for existing on Earth's surface) to about 30 F, raise them up to several hundred degrees, or extinguish open flames.
  • Fire & Heat Immunity: The Human Torch is unaffected by heat and flames, (including his own obviously) even when part of him is aflame and the rest of him is not.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Mechanic: Johnny is a expert mechanic since he was a teenager, able to overhaul a car's transmission by the age of 15.
  • Skilled Driver:Johnny has experience as a professional race car driver.
