Gwen's mother died when she was young and as such, her father, George Stacy, is very protective of Gwen as a result. She has been friends with Peter Parker and Harry Osborn for years, the former of which she's had a crush on since the 2nd Grade.
She was present at Connors Lab when Peter was biten by the spider that would turn him into Spider-Man, showing concern for him. Also, prior to starting her Junior year at Midtown High, Gwen was at Science Camp while Peter first began his double-life as Spider-Man.
High School LifeEdit
Starting the new school term, both Gwen and Peter gain internships at Dr. Curt Connors's laboratory at the Empire State University. Eddie Brock Jr., a long-time friend of Peter and Gwen, is also a freshman at college, interning with the Connors. After Curt Connors uses an experimental serum on himself, turning him into the "Lizard", she, along wih Dr. Martha Connors, attempt to create a gene cleansing serum that can turn Curt back to his human form, while Eddie goes after the Lizard.
Peter in contrast, runs away and Gwen is upset by how cowardly he acted, unaware that it was Peter, as Spider-Man, who maanged to get Curt Connors to take the gene cleansing serum. Worse, the following morning after she, Eddie, and the Connors read the Daily Bugle article about the Lizard rampage, including pictures, provided by Peter Parker himself, Gwen and the others are angry with Peter. Eventually, Gwen does learn to forgive Peter.
After Harry expresses his interest in going to the school Football Try-Outs, Gwen jokingly tries to dissuade him, but still goes to show her support both him and Peter (the latter of which, who is only trying out to support Harry), cheering loudly when both her friends do remarkably well. On a bus ride home from football try-outs, she nervously tries to asks Peter to the Fall Formal. However, before Gwen can ask him to be her date, Peter informs her that he would not go to the dance at all.
Later, Gwen is working with Eddie at the ESU lab, where she mentions the formal to him. Eddie asks if Peter asked her to go with him yet, and when Gwen explains that Peter isn't going, Eddie suggests that he could take her himself. When Peter does eventually arrive at the formal with Mary Jane Watson, Gwen is hurt, thinking Peter lied to her. After Mary Jane is crowned the Fall Formal queen alongside Eugene "Flash" Thompson, she admits to Eddie that seeing Peter's date with Flash, makes her smile.
Overtime, Gwen begins to notice a change in both Harry's physical and mental health, who has secretly been taking the Globulin Green formula, and tries to persuade Peter into talking to Harry about his condition. Peter talks to Harry too late though, and it is revealed that he was the Green Goblin entire time. Spider-Man and Norman agree to keep Harry's condition a secret, and everyone but Gwen and Peter believe he is travelling abroad (but Gwen is still unaware of the identity of the Green Goblin).
The Rise of VenomEdit
After Peter is possessed by the symbiote, he blows off her and his other friends, even as they try to be supportive of him after Aunt May is put in the hospital. Mary Jane convinces Gwen to admit to her true feelings for Peter, and urges her to "step up". After Eddie is possessed by the symbiote, he becomes Venom. Seeking revenge against Peter, Venom ties up Gwen and then suspends her from a large balloon during the Thanksgiving Day parade.
While Spider-Man battles Venom, the webs holding Gwen to the float eventually snap and she falls to the street below, saved at the last second by Mary Jane Watson and her other classmates (minus Stacy Avril) who use a deflated balloon to catch her. Gwen and her father then have Thanksgiving dinner with Peter and his Aunt, and Gwen finally kisses Peter for the first time, before running away. This makes Peter realize his own feelings for her, recalling Venom saying that he would go after the one Peter cared about the most.
Being Jealous Edit
Later in the year, Liz Allan's interest Peter leads him to start going out with her, much to Gwen's annoyance. Gwen is later kidnapped by Electro and Vulture, on orders from the Master Planner to black mail her father, George Stacy into following his commands. While Gwen is saved by Spider-Man, she is later shocked by Harry Osborn's attention, and winds up becoming his girlfriend.
Although Venom reveals Peter Parker's identity, Gwen finds the entire concept hilarious. Peter and Gwen are then ambushed by a group of reporters, who call her "Spider-Man's Girl." They ditch the paparazzi by hiding under a statue, and almost kiss, but Gwen's phone rings and ruins the moment.
Mary Jane helps Gwen with a makeover and from that point stops wearing her glasses. When the Green Goblin finally takes control of New York, Gwen and Peter finally talk, and nearly kiss again, but agree to end their relationships with Liz and Harry first.
However, at Norman Osborn's funeral, Harry states his belief that Norman was addicted like him and was driven insane with led him into framed Harry. Harry blames Spider-Man for his father's "murder." He then swears vengeance. Gwen decides to stay with Harry out of pitty, as he has been hurt too much already and Peter silently allows this. They then leave Peter standing at Norman's grave.
- According to the TV series creators, Greg Weisman and Victor Cook , had the series continued, Gwen would not have been killed off, unlike her comic counterpart, but Peter's main love interest would eventually had been Mary Jane, regardless.
- Gwen's appearance slowly changes over the course of the series. Her hair gradually gets longer, and after Mary Jane Watson gives her a makeover, including trading in Gwen's glasses for contacts, she resembles and becomes truly faithful to her comic book counterpart.
