Earth X is an alternate timeline taking place 30 years later into a dystopian future of the Marvel Universe, where virtually every single person has superpowers (it's established the human population have become Inhumans, due to the machinations of Black Bolt).
First assumed to be a future for the Marvel universe, however It is revealed in issue #11 of Paradise X, that the events shown in the series are not set in an alternate future as many assumed, but rather an alternate present.
The issue reveals that Paradise X is set in 2003, the year of publication. It is unclear if this was the original intent or a later revision.
In the backstory, it's established that it was believed that a failed experiment involving a worldwide network of Vibranium power generators to solve the energy crisis by Mr. Fantastic having gone awry was the reason behind the superpowered populace, but it's later revealed that Black Bolt was responsible, having unleashed the Terrigen Mists into Earth's atmosphere to transform the entire human race into Inhumans, having blinded Uatu the Watcher to prevent him from witnessing this. In addition, Captain America ended up killing the Red Skull, and in guilt, quit the Avengers. As well, Doctor Doom and Invisible Woman are killed in an explosion, and Namor the Sub-Mariner murdered the Human Torch. In revenge, Reed and Sue's son Franklin Storm curses Namor, causing half his body to burst into flame whenever on land, and Reed goes into exile in Latveria, wearing Doom's armor in shame. Benny Beckley, the evil son of Comet Man, is a telepath with the ability to control people, and the psychic backlash of his powers ends up killing the world's telepaths, Professor X, Jean Grey and Emma Frost amongst them. He dominates over New York City as the new Red Skull. Spider-Man's daughter May Parker has been bonded to the Venom symbiote, and is estranged from him. Also, Norman Osborn has become the new president of America, keeping the populace terrorized by an engineered tentacled monster called the Hydra (in tribute to HYDRA), and has employed Iron Man to provide protection in the form of mechanized replicants of the Avengers. Captain America has gone underground and leads a superhuman resistance against the tyranny of Osborn and the Skull.
In the present, Aaron Stack, aka Machine Man or X-51, is summoned by Uatu the Watcher, who is blind and nihilistic (courtesy of Black Bolt) to be his eyes and keep watch over current events.
